A 408-foot silver spire was installed on top of One World Trade Center in downtown Manhattan on Friday, bringing its official height to 1,776 feet and making it the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. Since the tower was first announced, a debate has raged over whether or not it truly is the tallest. According to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat — the authority on such matters — because the WTC’s spire is ornamental and not functional, it was counted in the building’s official height, edging out Chicago’s Willis Tower.

You’d think that the world’s tallest building – a structure that requires amazingly complex engineering and technology to reach its heights – would have an equally impressive sewage system. Unfortunately, that’s not the case because it isn’t hooked up to a municipal wastewater treatment system – so when you poop in the Burj Khalifa, that waste is actually trucked out of the city. Trucked out of the city! We’re frankly flabbergasted by the inefficiency of such a system. One of the world’s most advanced buildings relies on an arcane method to transport wastewater to a treatment facility outside of town. So remember, if you happen to visit and use the Burj Khalifa’s restroom, some unfortunate person has to collect your poop and drive it out of Dubai.

The new Los Angeles Federal Courthouse will be designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, and it will feature state-of-the-art sustainable design. Announced just this week, the US General Services Administration awarded the contract for the new project on Broadway street to the SF office of SOM. Although details are skant, the shimmering white cube will provide 550,000 square feet of space with updated security compared to the current Spring Street facility. The GSA, which is in charge of the process, is also looking for proposals to renovate the existing courthouse and use the sale of the building to finance construction.

Skidmore, Owings and Merrill‘s plan for a new sustainable Central Business District in Beijing was met with much fanfare when it was first announced, and now SOM has garnered even more attention by winning the AIA’s Regional and Urban Design Award for the project – with good reason. The CBD boasts an ambitious plan for green growth that, if successful, would result in eliminating 215,000 tons of CO2 per year – the equivalent of planting 14 million adult trees. SOM just unveiled a new master plan for a green city in Vietnam that comes hot on the heels of their Green Tech City. Situated on the edge of Danang, FPT City will be a 180-hector town for the communication company FPT’s employees and families. Composed of a downtown area, a university, and residential zones, the full service community will be walkable and sensitive to the flood-prone area thanks to the incorporation of green belts that connect the core to the out-reaching neighborhoods.

The China World Trade Tower III celebrated its grand opening today, closing the third and most recent phase of the incredible China World Trade Center development. The 81-story mixed-use tower is now Beijing’s tallest tower, hosting a hotel, offices, restaurants, meeting and commercial space, as well as a street level pedestrian friendly frontage. And if being the tallest wasn’t enough, the stunning new structure designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM) is also an energy efficient eco-tower aiming for the title of LEED Gold.
