South Korea recently announced that it will curtail the use of printed printed paper textbooks by investing $2 trillion to develop digital textbooks for all subjects and all schools by 2015. The new digital textbooks will not only contain the contents of ordinary textbooks, but also utilize other reference resources such as multimedia in order to help children learn.

The citizens living off the Han River in Seoul, South Korea inaugurated the world’s largest floating island just last week with great excitement! With two more islands slated to open in September, the recently opened Viva is already drawing crowds en masse with its first-rate entertainment complex. The stunning structure includes a 700 seat convention hall, restaurants and arcades — all powered by solar energy. When the development is completed, the trio of islands will be linked together by twenty-three weather-proof chains.

Electronics company Samsung has made a $7.04 billion commitment to the government to construct a massive eco-friendly production facility in South Korea. The reclaimed wetland area of Saemangeum has been awarded to Samsung by the South Korean Government for the development of the facility. The green town will boast a wind-power generator, solar battery house, research headquarters and 20,000 employee homes.

With electric buses, a huge forthcoming wind farm, and dozens of ecotastic buildings, South Korea is a leader in implementing sustainable development and promoting greener choices. As a part of a new policy plan announced by the Ministry of Environment, the Asian country has begun offering “green credits” for consumers who embrace a low-carbon lifestyle. The ministry issued green credit chips that are embedded into consumers’ credit cards. The chips store points when a cardholder buys certified green products or pays for green services, like public transportation.  The credits can be redeemed for cash or they can be used to lower utility bills. Something as simple as saying no to a paper cup at a coffee shop or properly recycling batteries can rack up the carbon points.

We first wrote about Korea’s Songdo IBD back in September, and now we’re thrilled to report that the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has just awarded the ambitious eco-city’s convention center a LEED NC 2.2 “Certified” rating, making it the first LEED-certified convention facility in Asia! Called Songdo Convensia and designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox, the beautiful undulating structure walks the green walk as much as it talks the green talk.

This gorgeous “Green Energy Theme Park” was designed by H Associates for the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), which held a contest to design their new Naju, South Korea headquarters. H Associates went all out with sloping green roofs, integrated solar power, a wind field, geothermal power, water reclamation and a whole host of other green features. The 29-story tower that emerges from the center of the park is a beacon of green design.

Last year, we watched as Korea’s Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) developed a new kind of electric vehicle that relies entirely on power from cables buried beneath the road–no outside recharging required. Now the system has been unveiled in its first real-world test location: the Seoul Grand Park amusement park in southern Seoul.

This beautiful sunset observatory made from recycled shipping containers was recently constructed in the harbor of Songdo New City in Incheon, South Korea. Designed and built by AnL Studio, “OceanScope” is a composed of five recycled containers, each one angled at a different height to provide 3 distinct views of the harbor.

The architects behind South Korea’s new eco dome have hatched another stunning project that plants a 131 acre green roof in the heart of Seoul. The National Ecological Institute of South Korea recently released plans for a large-scale nature reserve complete with an incredible series of eco domes, an education center, and an environmental think-tank. Designed by SAMOO, the Ecorium Project will be a striking environmental center comprising thousands of acres of open space in addition to greenhouses and a visitor center. Much like the Eden Project in the UK, the Ecorium Project will serve to educate people about nature, and provide a space for study of the world’s eco-systems and how best to protect them.

The permanent outdoor pavilion and glass canopy projects up-to-the minnute information about local air quality, and locals can send it a text message to receive a report from anywhere.

Fluid, one of the most eye-catching designs for the much-anticipated 2012 World Expo in Yeosu, South Korea, is a whale-like pavilion designed by Melbourne-based Peddle Thorpe Architects (PTA). Their organic floating exhibition space is designed around the concept of adaptability, making the structure useful for many scenarios, even long after the World Expo has concluded. With it’s environmentally aware design, Fluid has a minimal impact on the surrounding coastal ecosystem and has another extremely cool feature – after it’s duties in Yeosu are complete, the whole building can unlatch from its site and be sailed to other cities as a giant, amphibious floating exhibition!

A new super skyscraper has just been announced for South Korea and will tower over all other buildings in Asia when it is complete in 2014. From a global perspective, Lotte Super Tower 123, designed by Kohn Pederson Fox, falls just short of taking the title, and will be not the tallest but the  second tallest skyscraper in the world. The structure will serve as the new corporate headquarters for the Lotte Group, whose subsidairy, Lotte Construction, will build it. Zoning has been approved and excavation is nearly complete. With aims towards LEED silver certification, the tower will have a strong environmental component and will offer Seoulians mixed-use areas such as shops, apartments, offices and a hotel.

A recent competition earlier in 2009 held by the city of Chungju in South Korea made a call for a memorial space in the city’s United Nations Peace Park. Coming in at 3rd place was London-based firm ACME with their dramatic hive-like design. Drawing from the very core of what the United Nations is, this building is comprised of individual cells combined together to form a cube structure, mirroring how the UN is made up of individual countries who come together to form one entity. ACME’s proposal also includes an idyllic green roof and plenty of natural daylight.

It’s an exciting time for sports fans everywhere as cities around the world unveil the incredible stadiums that will host the events of tomorrow, and the designers and architects of Populous have them in spades. The latest competition-winning proposal from the HOK offshoot was recently selected as the primary stadium for the 17th Asian games in Incheon, South Korea. The adaptable stadium creates an abundance of green space within the city that will serve as a public park when not in use.
