Like a scene out of Star Trek, imagine one day being able to create an entire meal with the push of a button. For astronauts headed to Mars, 3D printers could potentially be their mechanical chefs, thanks to technology pioneered by such scientists as the Cornell University’s Fab@Home Student Project Team. They have developed gel-like substances called hydrocolloids that can be altered with flavoring agents to produce different tastes and textures when printed.

NASA has announced plans to launch the world’s largest solar sail in 2014 – and it will be travelling an incredible two million miles from Earth. The giant solar sail will use photons from the sun for propulsion, paving the way for various exploration missions that could be accomplished only through the use of “propellantless propulsion” technology. The solar sail technology could be used in the collection and removal of orbital debris, communicating with the Earth’s South Pole or even in organizing commercial space travel.

Scientists at organizations such as S.E.T.I (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) have traditionally looked for alien life by searching for radio signals. However according to Treehugger and The Atlantic, a trio of astronomers led by Penn State’s Jason Wright have begun a two-year search for massive alien solar power stations known as Dyson Spheres.

Warp drive – or travel at speeds faster than light – has long been one of the cornerstones of science fiction, however top NASA scientist Dr. Harold “Sonny” White recently stated that “a Star Trek experience within our lifetime is not such a remote possibility.” The Advanced Propulsion Theme Lead for the NASA Engineering Directorate wrote in a blog post on Icarus Interstellar: “At JSC, Eagleworks has initiated an interferometer test bed that will try to generate and detect a microscopic instance of a little warp bubble. Although this is just a tiny instance of the phenomena, it will be existence proof for the idea of perturbing space time—a “Chicago pile” moment, as it were.”

However a team of scientists from Seoul National University in South Korea have developed a new laser-based system that blasts microscopic jets of drugs into the skin, negating the need for large and painful single-use hypodermic needles and the medical waste they entail. Best of all, the laser-jab is said to be no more painful than being hit with a puff of air.

Two researchers at Weill Cornell Medical College have ‘cracked’ a mouse’s retina’s neural code and they believe that this information could be used to create a prosthetic device to restore sight to blind mice. The team have also done the same for a monkey retina — which is essentially identical to that of a human. In short, the researchers think that they can now design and create a bionic device that would allow the blind to see!

Researchers from Towson University have come close to making science-fiction an everyday reality by “trapping” a rainbow. Most people are familiar with the idea of a cloaking device or invisibility cloaks thanks to Star Trek and Harry Potter, but a real-world experiment designed to understand how to use and manipulate light involved using an array of 25,000 “invisibility cloaks,” each smaller than a hair’s breadth, to snare a rainbow, slowing light to a near-stop.

The United States’ Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) have done great things in the past – they have aided in the Apollo moon missions, invented the Internet, developed solar blimps and created batteries smaller than a grain of salt. However, it’s their latest venture that is literally out of this world. DARPA is set to begin work on a project called the 100-Year Starship Study, an initiative which is designed to see what it would take to create an organisation capable of taking us to the stars, or in essence, Starfleet!

Artist Faith Pearson took used printer waste and beamed it up(cycled) into a rather convincing model of the futuristic space vessel of Star Trek fame.
