The Houston Museum of Fine Arts has just chosen Steven Holl Architects to design a new building for their expansive institution. One of our longtime favorite firms in sustainable design and recent winner of the American Institute of Architects Gold Medal, Holl and Co. will certainly produce an eco-savvy and innovative addition to the museum. With buildings already designed by iconic artists Isamu Noguchi, Mies van der Rohe, and Rafael Moneo, the museum’s newest structure is certainly in good company.

Steven Holl Wins the 2011 AIA Gold Medal!

Steven Holl, sculptor of air and light and principal at Steven Holl Architects was just named the 2011 American Institute of Architects Gold Medal Winner for his innovative designs and contributions to architecture. Holl who was born sixty-four years ago today is known for his attention to relationships between light, reflections, space and time. His structures span the world from Kauai, Hawaii to Hensinki, Finland to Seoul, South Korea and are all marked by a careful consideration for the relationship between space, light, reflection and time. Holl integrates sustainable building techniques into his designs, which often take advantage of natural lighting and ventilation. He molds structures that fit their surrounding environment and work with the environment to lower their impact.

Architect Steven Holl Unveils Design for Campbell Sports Center at Columbia University

For years we’ve reported on Steven Holl‘s new projects popping up all over the world, and now we’re happy to report that the architect is returning to the Big Apple, bringing with him a striking new design for Columbia University. The beautiful new building will be christened Columbia’s new Campbell Sports Center, creating five stories of sustainable space for sports and recreation. The center is planned to open in the fall of 2012 — just in time for a great sports season!

Steven Holl Unveils Solar Powered Doctorate’s Building At The National University of Colombia

Loving pretty much everything Steven Holl does, we were excited to see the the architect’s preliminary concept designs for the new Doctorate’s Building at the National University of Colombia in Bogotá unveiled earlier this week. Hoping to reinvigorate the center of the campus with this new building, Steven Holl in collaboration with partner, Chris McVoy, and the university’s architecture office, are planning a building that turns inside out to connect with the outdoors. Topped off with solar panels, a green roof and a grey and rainwater recycling system that feeds into a reflecting pool, the Doctorate’s Building is likely to become the heart of the revamped campus green.

Steven Holl is one of the most celebrated and well-respected architects working today. His architectural work is widely recognized and covers extensive ground ranging from museums, educational facilities, residences, and much more – but it has been his carefully calculated sustainable design approach that has allowed his work to pervade with a poetic nature rarely seen in architecture today. Steven’s work has not only turned him into a central figure in the discussion of contemporary sustainable design, but has garnered him acclaim, not only from critics, but most notably, from his contemporaries. Although Steven doesn’t often grant interviews, on this rare event he was kind enough to sit down and give us his thoughts on individual style, green design, and even a little something about his childhood. Steven Holl Unveils Light-Filled Glasgow School of Art

The Glasgow School of Art just announced that New York-based architect Steven Holl won the competition to design an elegant new studio, teaching and research building. The project focuses on reducing energy use by providing daylight infiltration deep within the building. Recycled glass is used exclusively throughout the entire facade of the art school building, and the interior spaces are flooded with light from carefully placed light wells and large windows.

Steven Holl’s Green Linked Hybrid Housing Complex Opens!

Sitting on the outskirts of Beijing, Steven Holl’s eco city-within-a-city is now accepting more than 2,500 new residents. Featured previously on Inhabitat, Holl’s Linked Hybrid Development is a completely self-contained housing complex that features of one of the largest geothermal heating and cooling systems in the world, serving the development’s entire 6.18 hectares (15.27 acres). Five semi-public recreational areas wind their way through the compound, offering residents green space in the midst of high density living. The awards are already coming in and the Linked Hybrid complex has been dubbed the ‘best tall building’ by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH).

A welcoming beacon before a shining expanse of sea, Steven Holl Architects‘ LM project will update Copenhagen’s waterfront with two eye-catching photovoltaic-sheathed skyscrapers and a sky bridge studded with wind turbines. The iconic development recently took first place in a competition to design a new gateway for Copenhagen, and it was approved in a unanimous vote by the jury.

New Green Complex in China by Steven Holl

Architect Steven Holl always appeals to our sustainable side, capturing our imagination with beautiful designs that incorporate both social and environmental responsibility. His new design for a mixed use development in China is bringing a green sensibility to the skyline of Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan. The ‘Sliced Porosity Block’ will house offices, apartments, retail, a hotel, cafes and restaurants within five towers and a multi-level plaza rivaling Rockefeller Center. This high-performance building will integrate green strategies in heating, cooling, lighting and materials to attain an LEED gold certification.

We can’t help but love Steven Holl, so when we saw his design proposal for the Hudson Yards in NYC, we once again marveled at how good he is at creating responsible, human, and sustainable design that is just as wonderful and intriguing as the best architecture out there. Granted, this design is a proposal, but alas, we can still marvel at the beauty of great design.

STEVEN HOLL’S WHITNEY WATER PURIFICATION PLANT

One of our favorite projects mentioned in the AIA/COTE 2007 list of Top Ten Green Projects was perennial Inhabitat favorite Stephen Holl’s Whitney Water Treatment Plant located in New Haven, CT. This project is fantastic in many ways, but the real beauty of it lies in the fact that the 30,000 square feet water treatment facility is sitting under the largest green roof in the state of Connecticut.
