On October 10, Nashville built its first straw-bale house on Clayton Street in what’s known as the ’12th South District’. The owners of the house, Bob and Irma Bernstein, worked with general contractor Ryan Nichols to create this eco-friendly structure that not only draws upon pioneer tradition, but incorporates proven ideas that pre-date the founding of the New World. Straw, used as insulation and then covered with a natural earthen plaster, allows the house to breathe, and is also less expensive and fire-retardant. The project was sponsored by Green Home and Manuel Zeitlin Architects.

Exciting news! Construction began this month on what will be the UK’s largest straw bale building, which will utilize prefabricated construction and local straw from nearby farmland. The Sutton Bonington Biosciences Building at the University of Nottingham’s agriculture campus will bring a high-tech facility to the rural setting, combining the School of Biosciences and the School of Veterinary and Medical Sciences into one building. London-based Make Architects are responsible for the design of the new facility, which is slated to achieve a BREEAM Excellent Rating.
