As of Sunday, the world’s largest stand alone integrated photovoltaic project was pumping out power into the grid. The building integrated PV system is located on the roof of the recently completed Hongqiao Rail Station in Shanghai. With 20,000 panels, the 61,000 sq m roof system is expected to produce 6.3 million kilowatt-hours (kwh) of electricity per year, which could power 12,000 Shanghai households.

Final Design for SF’s Transbay Transit Center Includes Rooftop Park

All of our patient waiting has finally paid off – the final design for San Francisco’s new transit center was finally revealed last week! The San Francisco Transbay Transit Center is designed to hold 12 transit systems and will also house the future high speed rail terminus. Designed by Pelli Clarke Pelli, the final design for the center includes some changes from past incarnation, most notably an awesome 5.4 acre green roof and public park that will have an amphitheater for music performances and movie screenings. Downtown SF is getting better and better, now let’s get that HSR line under construction!

Often times standing around in even the most modern and sleek subway stations can be an utter drag. But imagine the surprise if your local platform suddenly sprouted a vast green meadow! Not too long ago Auckland New Zealand’s Britomart Station received a grassy green makeover that transformed 1,250 square meters of its cold hard concrete into a plush green field.

COBE Wins First Prize for Bike-Friendly Norreport Station in Copenhagen

COBE Architects blasted away its competitors with a sexy and bike-friendly new design in the recent competition to redesign Copenhagen’s Norreport train station. Almost retro in its lines, the architects’ vision of the new station is composed of a series of rounded, floating roofs set upon striking glass pavilions. Since bicycles are a preferred means of transportation in Copenhagen, ample bike parking was a main feature of the new structure, and other green features will include energy-efficient lighting and natural ventilation.

Santiago Calatrava Unveils High Speed Rail Station in Belgium

Liège, Belgium recently unveiled a stunning new high speed rail station that will serve to further connect Northern Europe’s rail lines. Designed by Santiago Calatrava, the Liège-Guillemins TGV railway is a beautiful glass and steel construction that is distinguished by its transparent exterior and its elegant transition between the city and the station.

The Shard: Vertical City Will Tower Over London

Construction has begun on the Shard, a skyscraper that will be the tallest building in Western Europe and will provide amazing views of London. Designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop (who was also responsible for the California Academy of Sciences), the Shard was inspired by towering church spires and the masts of ships that once anchored on the Thames. The new mixed-use development is located in the heart of London Bridge Quarter and will sit adjacent to the London Bridge Station, one of the busiest train stations in London.
