The Tree Bench concept is pretty self-explanatory: a seating area encircles a tree, which serves as the design’s focal point. Constructed by Marko Vuckovic from white corian material, the bench has five holes in its surface; the tree grows through one and grass through the others. It is easy to install and immediately incorporates the tree as part of the design.

Cau.la set out to transform a 205-year-old Coastal Douglas-fir that had fallen late in 2011 into a new and modern bench that could reconnect its users with the environment. The designer’s intention was to give the fallen tree a second life and use it as a medium to teach people to better respect the world’s precious resources. The form of the bench even takes on a broken shape, giving way to a symbolic representation that pays homage to the tree’s past. You can currently see the bench on display on Granville Island.

This clever pop-up Tree Bench was designed by Aandeboom, the Dutch team that brought us the clever P-Tree urinal. This quirky design takes the traditional park bench to another level by supporting it with a set of industrial straps, allowing it to hover over the ground while providing space for plants and grass to thrive beneath it. Designed for the Dutch city of Amersfoort, the temporary bench can be easily detached and moved to another tree, making it a useful solution for temporary outdoor seating. The design is also a brilliant way to make the most of the sunny spots in a park all year round, surprising visitors when they find it has been attached to a different nearby trunk!
