We remember a time when furnishings made from salvaged materials were considered too avant-garde for mainstream businesses, but international ad agency Digitas proves that era is all in the past with their funky new Chicago headquarters! The company commissioned Torchia Architects to turn wooden pallets, a shipping container, and other salvaged materials into an inspiring space on the 11th floor of a downtown Chicago building. This colorful mixed-use office space is further enlivened with urban graffiti and color to create an environment that is ideal for manufacturing cutting-edge ideas.

Swedish design collective Oddbirds has produced a beautiful range of interior objects, accessories and textiles by creatively combining old, new and recycled materials. This series of unique lamps is made from lost and found, rediscovered, and inherited tableware. Each lamp is made of pieces from various coffee and tea sets, and the designers are not shy of combining the chunky and rustic with the delicate and dear, which may be the secret to their success.

This modern bench/lounger was created by San Diego-based Crawford Creative Studio using sustainable, up-cycled materials. Unable to find any pre-made outdoor furniture to fit their small urban patio space, the designers chose the ubiquitous Ikea “Lack” coffee table as a building block. “They’re available used for about $4-6 a piece,” said Charles Crawford, “they’re strong, uniform and colorful, and in areas around Ikea stores, they’re basically a readily available resource. They’re like the wood of the Ikea tree.” The studio has also used the tables to make other furnishings such as clocks and lamps, and also as canvasses for artwork.

This awesomely quirky and colorful chest of drawers that we spotted at this year’s London Design Festival is like a furniture Frankenstein – and we mean that in the best way possible. Designer Zoe Murphy takes old pieces that have fallen from favor and combines them to make a totally new creation. The beautiful patterns and imagery that adorn the front of the drawers are inspired by her hometown of Margate.

Constructed of salvaged piano keys, Designer Andrew Rumpler’s latest project repurposes the ivories to compose – a chair! Named in honor of 1940s stride pianist Arthur Tatum, the lounge marries concept and function to get its name—a play on words derived not only from the “lounge” style chair, but also the Harlem venues Tatum frequented as a pianist.

This smart Upcycle Ottoman by Gus* Modern is made of repurposed jute bags that were once used to carry organic fair trade certified coffee. Produced in a limited quantity, each piece is unique and shows the branding and markings of the bags used in the process. No word if they still carry that wonderful coffee scent, but you can still identify which company produced the beans and where they came from.

After all the hoopla from the recent New York, London, Paris, and Milan fashion shows, it is nice to get back to basics and think about what might be essential for tweaking the-olde-green closet. Granted there is some impressive sustainable technology currently being used in eco-fashion and greener garment production, but it is also nice to see a movement towards the tailoring of old-made-new materials via thrift store sifting and creative construction. A range of designers are recycling luxury fabrics into eco-chic creations, while others are transforming caste-off materials into totally edgy designs. We are not advocating dumpster diving per se, but in the spirit of Cradle to Cradle authors McDonough and Braungart, why not remake the way that we make things as well as wear them from start to finish?
