Mumbai-based designers Nishant Jethi and Aalap Deasi have developed a psychedelic public trash bin that rewards people for properly disposing of their waste by displaying colorful kaleidoscope patterns. Dubbed the Cleanoscope, the eco-friendly bin shows that “cleanliness creates beauty” by making waste disposal a creative act rather than a dull task.

HORTUS — or Hydro Organisms Responsive To Urban Stimuli — is a crazy new exhibit in London made up of 325 transparent bags of algae hanging from the ceiling via a network of ropes. Long plastic tubes hang from the bags and visitors are instructed to blow into them to feed the algae — which ranges in color from dark green, to pink, to brown — with their breath. Devised by the Architectural Association School of Architecture, the crazy algae greenhouse is a way for visitors to use their own carbon emissions to foster new life.

For the next month, visitors to New York City’s Storefront for Art and Architecture will be making music with an unlikely instrument: the gallery’s building. For his installation “007_Urban_Songline,” artist Allard van Hoorn carefully interlaced fishing line through Storefront’s uniquely-designed space to create a spiderweb-like maze for visitors to walk through. The lines act as the chords of a massive instrument that creates a musical translation of the gallery’s physical space, which van Hoorn painted a bright orange-red. Tata Technologies decided to go small for the Michelin Challenge Design showcase and came up with the eMO electric mini car being displayed now at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Michelin asked designers to come up with a personal mobility vehicle for sustainable urban living in 2046 and displayed the lilliputian results to NAIAS-goers at the show. The eMO might look miniature, but don’t be deceived – it fits four adults comfortably, has a range of 100 miles per charge and a top speed of 65 miles per hour.

Argentine studio Designo Patagonia created this awesome series of Tetris-shaped street furniture that showcases recyclable materials like plastic bottles, cans, and paper. Located within a city park in Córdoba, Argentina, these unique seats and tables were designed for recreation and to teach passerby about sustainability issues. The Tetris-shaped containers are made from iron frames and glass, are packed with recyclable materials, and feature easy-to-understand eco-facts written on the surface of each piece.

This past weekend Spanish architecture firm Ecosistema Urbano teamed up with the VEA school of gardening to launch Greenhamar – a 24-hour event focused on greening a public square in Hamar, Norway. The event featured homemade mushroom soup, bike-powered smoothies, and amazing pop-up garden installations. Greenhamar was part of dreamhamar, a participatory project that enables citizens to reclaim public spaces by participating in the online and on-site workshops.
