Urban rooftop farming is thriving in cities like Brooklyn and Montreal, but it hasn’t quite caught on yet in Boston. That’s about to change in a big way with the launch of Higher Ground Farm, a 40,000-square-foot farm on top of the Boston Design Center that’s scheduled to break ground later this spring. When it’s completed, the farm will be the second-largest open-air rooftop farm in the world (behind the sprawling Brooklyn Grange), and founders Courtney Hennessey and John Stoddard expect to be selling vegetables by the summer.

The Farmery is a start-up in Raleigh, N.C. that is developing an urban farm and market built from shipping containers and standard greenhouse components. The bottom level serves as a market to sell the crops, and the entire structure is used to grow the crops. The structure uses the inside of the containers to grow mushrooms, and the walls of the containers are covered in growing panels to form living walls where herbs, strawberries, lettuces and greens are grown.

Students at Green Mountain College (GMC) recently took on a mission to develop a shed for urban farmers that would suit the needs of the gardeners of the future. The OVaL Shed — otherwise known as the Occupy Vacant Lots — is their final design, and it features a butterfly roof, rainwater collection, recycled materials, and a customizable plan. The project was designed by 20 students as part of GMC’s Renewable Energy and Ecodesign (REED) certificate program, and it now sits at its final resting place on the GMC campus where it will nurture plants for the Champlain Valley Native Plant Restoration Nursery operated by the Nature Conservancy.

A new report from researchers at the University of Minnesota says that the world’s food demand will double by 2050, however thankfully there is a gaping hole in their research – the team neglected to consider advancements in urban farming, which could provide agricultural solutions for Earth’s growing human population (as it is already doing in places like Havana, Cuba). The University of Minnesota researchers estimate that an area the size of the United States would need to be cleared by developing nations in order to make enough to feed their growing communities, and that clearing that area will significantly increase carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere leading to increased climate change. Or, we could build farms on empty urban lots, on city rooftops and in community spaces and feed ourselves on the open land we already have by using new technologies being developed in empty storefronts in London and high-tech laboratories nestled into Subway sandwich shops in Japan.

If New Yorkers were able to make a few changes to their beloved city, more green spaces and less stalled construction sites would be at the top of their lists. One such construction site is the Alexandria Center on East 29th Street — but unlike the many eyesores that litter the city, those involved in this project are making the best of the situation. Instead of letting the site be a blight on their landscape, the stalled space has been transformed into an urban farm to grow veggies for NYC’s Riverpark restaurant!

Because of the recession, stalled construction sites are a problem all across the nation. New York City alone has more than 600 projects awaiting more financing before construction can continue. One such project is the second phase of the Alexandria Center for Life Science, a complex on Manhattan’s 29th Street near the East River. But instead of letting the stalled site become a derelict eyesore, the developers transformed the space into a 15,000 square foot urban farm that has been growing food for Riverpark, the on-site restaurant, since the beginning of the summer. We’ve covered a wide variety of urban agriculture projects in the past – the rooftop farm Brooklyn Grange, the Battery Conservancy’s new turkey-shaped farm, and futuristic vertical farms, to name a few. Our view of them has generally been positive, but perhaps urban farms deserve a second look. Edward L. Glaeser, PhD, a professor of economics at Harvard University recently put forth his radical view that urban farms reduce metropolitan density levels, and thus do more harm to the environment than good. But does his argument really hold water?

We’ve heard of supermarket hydroponics before: window hanging, wall-mounted, and rooftop farm concepts have been abundant over the last decade. Truthfully, though, how many have you actually seen? Throughout 2011, the New York hydroponics firm Better Food Solutions plans to change that by installing a network of hydroponic greenhouses atop a number of grocery stores across the nation. The group, also behind the New York “Greenhouse Project” and Brightfarms Systems, believes that by working with grocery stores they can provide local food and further prove that hydroponics is the future of agriculture.
