Have you hugged a tree lately? If not, you might want to show your appreciation with a good squeeze. According to a recent state-by-state US Forest Service study, urban forests are responsible for storing 708 million tons of carbon – a service valued at $50 billion. Each year, our leafy friends capture an additional 21 million tons of carbon to the tune of a $1.5 billion benefit. Led by Dave Nowak, the study was published in the journal Environmental Pollution.

Sunny southern California is synonymous with transportation by car, but today as the auto industry struggles, there are large swaths of fallow concrete-covered expanses where car dealerships once thrived. In Glendale, California, a mile-long corridor known as the Brand Boulevard of Cars takes up over 33 acres for the exhibition, storage, and maintenance of new and used cars. Envisioning a better use for this prime real estate, Osborn Architects has a put forth a novel idea that would re-skin and re-purpose this area, essentially creating an urban forest out what is now a desolate wasteland.

Inspired by mountainous Chinese landscapes and the traditional villages built their hillsides, MAD Architects has unveiled plans to create a towering vertical Urban Forest. Designed for Chongqing, China, the projects consists of a stacked vertical forest set in the heart of the city, designed to bring more nature and open space in a dense and compact way. MAD Architects is becoming more known for their sustainable designs, and hopefully the green design aspects of this new tower extend beyond the garden spaces on each floor.
