A new report from the European Environment Agency states that the effects of climate change are already evident in Europe – and the situation is only going to get worse. The report, titled Climate Change, Impacts and Vulnerabilities in Europe 2012, notes that the past 10 years have been the warmest ever on record, and with an increase in extreme weather, Europe should expect to be hit hard by the effects of climate change.

Europe is a big place and as such, climate change will affect the continent’s cities in different ways. For example, if sea levels rise, there is a good chance that Venice will be underwater, but what about the other cities of Europe – London, Paris, Rome, Berlin, Madrid? Well, the European Environment Agency (EEA) believe they know what could happen and have published a series of detailed interactive maps that allow users to explore data from more than 500 cities across Europe.

Outdoor living and recreation spaces are popular for a number of reasons: they provide more urban green space, they promote better human health, and they offer cost savings. Yes, that’s right, you can actually save money by developing an outdoor space that harnesses the potential of its local environment. Read on to learn about Therma-HEXX‘s ThermaPAVER, a temperature converting panel that takes a big leap forward in making outdoor spaces more comfortable, while also providing other functions like heating your water ecologically and invisibly!

Mongolia seems like the last place on earth that should worry about global warming, but all the same the frigid northern country is already planning for the worst. In addition to crazy cold winters, it turns out that the capital city Ulan Bator also experiences scorcher summers that exact a tremendous energy load. To cut down on energy use and scale back the urban heat island effect, local geoengineering firm ECOS & EMI plans to create massive chunks of manmade ice, like the one seen above from BLDGBLOG, modeled after naturally-occuring naleds, which will be used to not only cool the city during the summer, but also provide fresh drinking water!

With Times Square now officially a pedestrian-only zone, the NYC Department of Transportation is looking to implement a massive overhaul to the area. But before that can happen in 2012, they wanted a semi-temporary installation to “refresh and revive” the streetscape. Molly Dilworth, known for her rooftop pour paintings, was recently awarded the first prize for her entry “Cool Water, Hot Island”. Her proposal is a graphical representation of NASA’s infrared satellite data of Manhattan, and appears to be a cool, refreshing river of water flowing down Broadway!
