Diller Scofidio + Renfro beat out fierce competition to apply the same urban revitalization savvy to Aberdeen, Scotland as they did to New York’s cherished High Line park. DS+ R went up against Foster + Partners to clinch the final win, which the designers told our friends over at WAN only encouraged them to work harder for a more compelling design. They and the residents of Aberdeen will definitely be rewarded for their efforts. When complete, the “Granite Web” will feature a gorgeous new green park, a partially buried performance center, and a cultural arts center, all of which are expected to completely transform the heart of this historic city.

San Francisco’s Dogpatch neighborhood is experiencing a renaissance, and the Potrero Launch is a new residential building that will be a landmark part of the revitalization efforts. Scheduled for completion this summer, this $80 million LEED Gold project, built on a former brownfield site, is bringing over 150 jobs to the neighborhood, a much-needed community daycare facility, and 196 residential lofts — twenty percent of which will be offered at affordable rates for working families. Every city deserves a High Line park — Harlem perhaps more than others. In its heyday, Harlem enjoyed an open air food market under the active Metro North rail line called, La Marqueta, which was a common meeting area and place to buy, sell, and trade. In the 1970′s the market declined considerably and has never bounced back — and right now, it’s practically empty. Progress is afoot though, and the Harlem’s Economic Development Corporation is gaining support to revitalize the space and transform it into a mile-long covered market and public park promenade – a High Line for Harlem.

Iceland’s currency may be devalued, but thankfully the same thing hasn’t happened to the country’s lust for arts and culture. The capital city of Reykjavík, will soon be welcoming the Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Center designed by Henning Larsen Architects with Olafur Eliasson and Artec. Considered to be one of the most ambitious cultural projects the country has undertaken in years, this stunning new building will become the new home of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and the Icelandic Opera. A sleek and modern design, Harpa’s multi-faceted glass façade also provides ample amounts of natural interior lighting and features a unique system of LED lights that give the structure an Icelandic glow in the evenings.

For those New Yorkers who look forward to the first Thursday of each month for the DUMBO Gallery Walk, now there is even more reason to head that direction: the DUMBO archway renovation is complete! Although the archway has been open since the fall of 2008, the DUMBO Improvement District and NYC Department of Transportation recently invited pedestrians in to view the structure’s upgraded interior. Designed by Rogers Marvel Architects and Jim Conti Lighting Design, the “beautification” project introduces wooden benches, lighting, and street improvements.

As the construction process for Hudson Yards drags on in New York, we’re glad to see green urban design is alive and well in Chicago. The windy city is no stranger to sustainable building, and this urban park, located on the fringe of the city’s downtown, will certainly give Chicago even more green cred. Perkins + Will, the architects behind the design, developed the park to create more open space for the city, but the greenway also proves to be a pedestrian-friendly gateway that connects the existing downtown to any future development across the Kennedy Expressway.
