In recent years undercover recordings of horrific abuses against animals have proven instrumental in prosecuting farms that, often systematically, mistreat their animals. But several states—ten in 2013 alone—have introduced anti-whistleblower bills that seek to make it a crime to document abuses of livestock, and aim to criminalize anyone who applies for a job in agriculture without stating ties they have to animal rights organizations.

A Big Mac may be the international sign for McDonald’s, but not in India. The fast-food giant will open its very first all-vegetarian location in the South-Asian country next year, as part of a move to break through to a market that is 20 to 42% meat-free. With McAloo Tikki potato burgers leading the pack, McDonald’s is in for a real transition as it tries to appeal to both a Hindu population, which considers cows sacred, and the Muslim community that doesn’t eat pork. The first location, in true McDonald’s fashion, will be next door to a bustling tourist site – the Golden Temple in Amritsar, northern India.

In one of the most disappointing news items of the week, the US Department of Agriculture retracted its support of Meatless Monday after prompting outrage from the cattle industry. On July 23, the USDA sent out their USDA Greening Update newsletter, which encouraged USDA employees to participate in Meatless Monday, noting, “One simple way to reduce your environmental impact while dining at our cafeterias is to participate in the ‘Meatless Monday’ initiative.” It didn’t take long for the cattle industry to respond, prompting the USDA to issue a retraction.

It’s hardly news that eating meat is a bad idea: it’s long been recognized that the dietary choice is not only damaging to your health, but also a significant driving factor in global warming. However, a new study has detailed another worrying element in meat production – the greenhouse gas emissions from fertilizers used to grow animal feed. The study from the Woods Hole Research Center in Massachusetts, published in Environmental Research Letters, calls for a 50 percent reduction in meat consumption and changes in agricultural practices so as to stem rising emissions of nitrous oxide, reported to be the most potent of all greenhouse gases.
