Ultra energy-efficient cars don’t always have to come with a high price tag. One upcoming vehicle from Renault-Nissan and India’s Bajaj Auto will, in fact, cost just $3,000 and reach an impressive 70 mpg. The Renault-Nissan Alliance has been working with Bajaj (India’s second-largest bike manufacturer) on development of the vehicle for two years, but the partners just signed a memorandum of understanding this past week.

Just in time for the New York Auto Show, the U.S. government has announced the first ever greenhouse gas emissions standards for cars and light trucks! As a result of the rules set by the EPA and the Department of Transportation, vehicles will be required to meet an estimated combined average emissions level of 250 grams of carbon dioxide per mile (approximately 35.5 miles per gallon) by 2016.

GM claims that the Chevy Volt can get 230 MPG under city driving conditions, but that’s nothing compared to the 2,487 MPG squeezed out of a combustion engine-powered prototype vehicle built by students at Laval University. The school took home the grand prize in Shell’s annual Eco-Marathon Americas for the second year in a row — last year Laval set a 2,757.1 MPG record.

This past Sunday, in New York City, the unthinkable happened: Broadway was officially closed… to cars that is. As part of Mayor Bloomberg’s plan to reduce traffic in the city, two sections of Broadway, from 47th to 42nd and from 35th to 33rd Streets, were closed to all vehicular traffic. For the first time ever, happy New Yorkers were able to traverse Times Square without feeling the need to compete with cars.
