A new report from the European Environment Agency states that the effects of climate change are already evident in Europe – and the situation is only going to get worse. The report, titled Climate Change, Impacts and Vulnerabilities in Europe 2012, notes that the past 10 years have been the warmest ever on record, and with an increase in extreme weather, Europe should expect to be hit hard by the effects of climate change.

Europe is a big place and as such, climate change will affect the continent’s cities in different ways. For example, if sea levels rise, there is a good chance that Venice will be underwater, but what about the other cities of Europe – London, Paris, Rome, Berlin, Madrid? Well, the European Environment Agency (EEA) believe they know what could happen and have published a series of detailed interactive maps that allow users to explore data from more than 500 cities across Europe.

Millionaire high fashion designer and politician Pierre Cardin’s plans for a futuristic skyscraper near Venice is turning quite a few heads. The proposed 800ft, nearly $2 billion project, dubbed the “Palais Lumiere“,  is garnering criticisms that it will ruin the skyline of the UNESCO World Heritage city.

The people behind the unreal-looking ACROS building in Japan have done it again, this time for a medical facility in Venice. Emilio Ambasz Associates touched the tips of two 12 meter pre-stained copper walls together to enclose a series of stepped green terraces, creating a massive green roofed amphitheater. Called the Eye Bank and located in Venice, this inventive building is kept cool by its angled walls and greenery, which reduce its mechanical load while also creating the type of dramatic visual impact the firm is known for.

Looks like gondolas are out, and bam!’s greenery-filled outdoor rooms for Venice are in! Chosen out of 201 proposals from all five continents by a judging panel that included Bjarke Ingels of BIG Architects, the winning design of the Venice CityVision 2011 Design Competition aims to restore the relationship between Venetians and their famous canals. bam!’s vision included the sustainable use of the canals as well as filling them with floating pod rooms that can be used in any number of ways.

OMA has just revealed plans for the restoration of Fondaco Dei Tedeschi’s landmark building in Venice, Italy. The incredible structure is an iconic piece of architecture held in high esteem for not only Venetians, but for Italy as a whole. Settled right along the Grand Canal, the structure was first built in 1228 and has become a central point for both culture and commerce. After undergoing a number of dramatic changes, the building has recently fallen to disuse and is now completely inaccessible to the public. Commissioned by the Benneton family, who owns the building, OMA has designed an incredible new program for the structure that focuses on reactivating the building as a vibrant new cultural center for the famed city.

We love the idea of this green lamp that blends natural textures with recycled materials to bring a bit of nature indoors. Conceived by three Venetian architects for a charity competition, the Grass-On Lamp by ITlab is made entirely of recycled materials, including the synthetic grass, and completely recyclable. The cube structure of the lamp gives it added versatility, letting it rest on the floor, on a table, or suspended from the air.
