Indoor farms need light—and a lot of it—to grow crops, but that energy adds up big time in terms of cost and environmental impact. A Pinkhouse is a new type of indoor farm that grows crops using pink-colored light. Rather than bathing plants with white light (which has all the colors of the spectrum), a Pinkhouse uses a mix of red and blue light. By not using all the other colors, indoor vertical farms can cut down on their power bill with low-energy LED lights that emit just the right shade of magenta.

West Elm home furnishing recently made its debut in the UAE by opening their first retail store in The Dubai Mall. The new store features a diverse mix of modern home designs and inspirational pieces. GSky Plant Systems, Inc. helped bring a touch of nature to the store by installing two large green walls. The beautiful living walls are situated behind the cash wrap, serving as the store’s centerpiece to greet customers as they enter the store.

Vertical gardens and green walls are beautiful and environmentally friendly means of adding a little life to architecture – but until now, most required structural foundations to help attach the plants and soil to the building. Now, a group of researchers led by Antonio Aguado, Ignacio Segura, and Sandra Manso at the Structural Technology Group of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya has developed a new multilayer concrete that is able to support plant life. Both a medium for growth and a construction material, the system allows for thermal regulation and CO2 sequestration.

Architect and New Yorker Laurence Tamaccio has come up with an interesting solution to beautify the unsightly stretch of the West Side Highway that spans his neighborhood – blanketing it in a leafy green “Vine Line”. His proposed solution would entail covering one side of the highway with a trellis system that could then be planted with air-cleaning ivy interspersed with sections of dramatic waterfalls. Tamaccio has already created a presentation and petition for the plan, which he thinks could transform an eyesore into a beautiful focal point for the whole community.

MisoSoupDesign‘s Invisible Farm is a vertical window farming concept that was created as a part of the Taiwan Wanderer Guide 2012 Exhibition at Taichung, Taiwan. The unit combines vertical farming with the traditional Taiwanese window cover into a living installation that is perfect for urban apartments or other small spaces. The project was completed in September 2012, and it includes more than 50 hexagonal units, each of which is fed by a small water intake pipe.

In the never-ending quest to develop better and more efficient fruit and vegetable growing techniques, Vakant Design has produced the Fogger, a vertical planting unit that can grow large quantities of food in tight spaces. The unit uses “fogponics,” which delivers water and nutrients to plant roots via fog vapor. The unit is fully automated; all users have to do is fill up the tank with water and plug it in. The self-contained system ensures that excess water and nutrients are fed back into the circulation instead of getting lost through seepage or evaporation.
