Everyone has heard of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but did you know that there was a Robot Hall of Fame? Founded in 2003 at Carnegie Mellon University, the Robot Hall of Fame was created to recognize landmark achievements in robotics technology and to create a broader awareness of the contributions that robots and robotics make to science and society. Now for the first time, the public is being asked to vote on which robots they’d like to see inducted, and our favorite junk-recycling robot Wall-E has been nominated!

If there is something that we can be sure of, it’s that LEGOs really can be used to build just about anything. From computers and cameras to animals and robots, we’ve seen our favorite building blocks transformed in more ways than we can imagine. Now we have another impressive LEGO creation to add to our ever-growing list: a real life Wall-E robot. Using a LEGO Mindstorms NXT kit, Montreal-based creator Marc-André Bazergui created a robot that moves and transforms just like the real Wall-E, guaranteed to amaze kids and adults alike. This unbelievable city piled high with trash is a real place called Garbage City, outside of Cairo in Egypt. It’s populated by a community of workers called Zabbaleen, who personally collect, sort, reuse, resell or otherwise repurpose Cairo’s waste. Recently several photographers have trained their cameras upon the city, and now we see what it would really be like to live in the aftermath of our own consumption.

It may not be as tiny or nimble as Wall-E, but this real-life DustCart robot traversing the streets of Peccioli, Italy is just as cute. The robot, part of the $3.9 million DustBot research program, collects trash and measures atmospheric pollutants like sulfur oxide, benzene, ozone, and nitrogen oxide with its on-board sensors. The robot can even be summoned with a cell phone and can go door to door, identify residents with a personal ID number, and sort their trash into organic, recyclable, or waste!
