As the clean tech and electric vehicle industries grow, there is an ever greater demand for lithium – the key ingredient in the lithium-ion batteries used to store energy in EVs, laptop computers and a host of other devices. At present the US imports around 80 percent of its lithium, but the University of Wyoming’s Carbon Management Institute just discovered a massive reserve that could transform the US from a “significant lithium importer to an independent lithium producer.”

Despite significant gains in both large scale solar and wind energy throughout the globe, a new report released by the International Energy Agency (IEA) states that the rapid uptake of renewables is not enough to stop global warming. The goal of keeping global temperatures from rising above two degrees celsius – considered by scientists to be crucial to maintaining some kind of normality – is still a long way off, because most of the world’s energy is still derived from coal.

However Moray Offshore Renewables Ltd is planning to top both by constructing three offshore wind farms located 22km (13.5 miles) from the Caithness coast that will contain a total of 339 turbines. The £4.5bn project has the potential to power up to one million households in Scotland.

The kingdom of Saudi Arabia sits upon the world’s second-largest oil reserves, and as such, oil dominates the national economy. But in recent years, Saudi Arabia has begun taking advantage of the abundant sun and wind it enjoys by developing several major renewable energy projects. According to a new white paper published this week, Saudi Arabia will seek to develop 23.9 GW of renewable energy by 2020 and 54.1 GW by 2032, making it one of the biggest renewable energy producers in the world.

Hydroelectric power can be a very efficient way to produce or augment renewable energy. But if you don’t have a nearby river that’s big enough to dam—that’s where pumped storage comes in. Using the power of gravity and a reversible turbine, Toronto’s Northland power wants to convert an old open-pit iron ore mine in Marmora, Ontario, into a waterfall five times the height of Niagara Falls. Water spilling over the new waterfall could generate 400-megawatts of power and allow customers to take advantage of peak-time power prices when demand is high and local wind turbines typically are less active.

Over the past decade, no country has embraced renewable energy with as much enthusiasm as Germany. Despite phasing out nuclear power, the country is exporting more energy than ever, thanks largely to its investment in renewable energy. One town in particular stands as a shining beacon of the potential that renewable energy holds: Feldheim, a small village located about 60 kilometers from Berlin that has its own energy grid and generates all of its power from wind, solar and biogas.

The car, dubbed the Wind Explorer, was designed by New Jersey-based Evonik Industries to demonstrate the potential of the company’s developments in battery power and lightweight materials.

But that’s not all – the nation just announced that it installed 1,008 new wind turbines last year with a total capacity of 2,439 megawatts. This figure exceeds the previous year’s wind energy capacity by roughly 20%, further exhibiting the stable growth of the German renewable energy market.

It’s perhaps a bit surprising that Australia—with its sunny self-presentation—is not only the world’s largest exporter of coal, but at 28 billion tonnes of CO2 per year creates the highest per capita greenhouse gas emissions in the world. In tandem with this, the country also has immense potential for generating renewable energy; it really is quite sunny, with large areas of open land and surrounded by water. So much so, claims a report by the University of Melbourne and the collaborative Zero Carbon Australia Project, that the country could be powered by solar and wind energy alone within 10 years—if the political will existed.

A public private partnership between UK government and oil companies has pledged £15.5 million to develop enormous wind turbines with blades that are as long as two Olympic-sized swimming pools. Financing from Energy Technologies Institute (ETI), with members such as BP and Shell, will allow the British company Blade Dynamics to develop 328 foot modular blades that are comprised of several pieces. Made with carbon fiber instead of fiberglass, they will be cheaper to build, easier to transport and lighter than conventional blades.
