Critics of renewable energy often argue that wind and solar power are “boutique” energy sources that could never satisfy the world’s energy needs, but one new report has found that solar power could provide all of the energy needed in many parts of the world. The report, which was produced by World Wildlife Fund (WWF), along with First Solar, 3TIER and Fresh Generation, found that in seven case studies, less than 1 percent of total land mass would be required to meet 100 percent of projected electricity demand in 2050, demonstrating that solar is indeed a viable energy source in many parts of the world.

You know it’s the holidays when you begin to see those adorable Coca-Cola polar bears all over the place, but with the catastrophic effects of global warming, real life polar bears are not nearly as abundant. To raise awareness for these lovable creatures and their endangered surroundings, Coca-Cola has announced that it is teaming up with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) for a project they call Arctic Home. Starting in November, 1.4 billion red Coca-Cola cans will be turned white in honor of the bears and the important cause.

Natural rattan is making a comeback in design circles, but unfortunately, conventional forestry practices can damage tropical forests when the rattan is harvested. WWF is currently working with Swedish designers and Mekong-based companies to develop sustainably produced rattan products that are suitable for the international market. A collection of their rattan home accessories is currently being showcased this week at the international design fair Ambiente in Frankfurt.

The recently finished green roof atop the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) headquarters in Washington, D.C. is the third largest in the nation’s capitol. The project involved replacing the original 24 year-old roof with a 27,750 sq ft, state of the art living system of locally grown plant life. WWF has already impressed us with green architectural innovation at their headquarters in the Netherlands, and we’re glad to see them giving Washington D.C. an excellent example of the benefits of a green roof.

The World Wildlife Fund has been making huge waves in the environmental movement since it was established five decades ago, and is now taking its mission yet another step further by applying it to architecture. RAU Architecture‘s organically shaped design was selected from a variety of candidates as the new look for the WWF Netherlands headquarters based on the fact that the RAU proposed using the existing building as the crux of the new one instead of demolishing it. Completed in 2006, the building has remarkable sustainable innovations that allow it to be entirely self-sufficient, carbon neutral, and a wonderful work environment for employees. What we love even more is that RAU’s design does not sacrifice architectural style in order to achieve its environmental goals.

You wouldn’t normally associate any massive New Year’s Eve city celebration with environmental sustainability, but that is precisely what the City of Sydney is trying to do with this years New Years Eve celebrations. Sydney is host to one of the largest, if not the largest, display of fireworks in the world, and this New Year the city is attempting to make sure that sustainability is forefront and center in every detail of the celebrations.
