You’d think that the world’s tallest building – a structure that requires amazingly complex engineering and technology to reach its heights – would have an equally impressive sewage system. Unfortunately, that’s not the case because it isn’t hooked up to a municipal wastewater treatment system – so when you poop in the Burj Khalifa, that waste is actually trucked out of the city. Trucked out of the city! We’re frankly flabbergasted by the inefficiency of such a system. One of the world’s most advanced buildings relies on an arcane method to transport wastewater to a treatment facility outside of town. So remember, if you happen to visit and use the Burj Khalifa’s restroom, some unfortunate person has to collect your poop and drive it out of Dubai.

Even since the current world’s tallest builing – the Burj Khalifa in Dubai – was completed, there has been a constant battle to build the world’s next tallest building. The current record holder stands tall at 828 meters and took five years to build, but a Chinese company called Broad Sustainable Building (BSB) aims to smash that record by building the 838 meter eco-friendly Sky City tower, in Changsa, China in a mere 90 days – and they’re planning to use prefab building techniques to construct the skyscraper so quickly!

As Azerbaijan enjoys its relatively newfound status among oil- rich nations, it’s looking to join the seemingly endless race to construct the world’s tallest tower. Azerbaijan’s Avesta Group has announced that they are hoping to build a $2 billion, 3,444 foot tall tower in the former Soviet Republic. This would place it at 720 feet above present title holder, the Burj Khalifa Tower in Dubai. Its height will also surpass that of Saudi Arabia’s 3280 foot Kingdom Tower, which is still in development with completion slated for 2017.

At an unveiling in Dubai yesterday, LEGO’s Architecture Series got a whole lot taller with the release of their Burj Khalifa model — a miniature replica of the world’s tallest building. We don’t think that LEGO’s Burj Khalifa comes with its real-life green oasis on the ground floor, but it surely comes with enough little bricks for creative builders to dream big about greener projects in the future. The new model will go on sale at LEGO.com sometime soon.

Designed for Dubai by Woods Bagot, the Nakheel Tower is planned to be the world’s tallest skyscraper. The towering spire would stand over a kilometer tall, measuring in at 1,400 meters (4,593 ft) and putting the Burj Khalifa to shame. The tower is part of a much larger marina development in Dubai and also designed to LEED standards – that is if it ever gets built.

Whether you love it or hate it, the Burj Dubai, the tallest building on the face of the planet and the one the whole world has been anticipating, opens today in Dubai! Standing at least 160 stories high (the final height will be revealed at the inauguration ceremony), the controversial tower does not eclipse the world’s second tallest building, Taipei 101, by just a little – it is actually at least 1,000 ft taller (about the same height as the Eiffel Tower). While we’re excited about the opening of this spectacular architectural feat, we’re still skeptical about the Burj’s efforts to green itself, as well as its elephantine carbon footprint.

Taipei 101, famous for being one of the world’s tallest buildings, is set to get some major eco-upgrades in an effort to save money, reduce its impact, and gain the much coveted title of “World’s Tallest Green Building.” In 2007, the Burj Dubai surpassed Taipei 101 in terms of height, but the Taiwanese building won’t give up the fight, throwing down $1.8 million in energy efficiency upgrades, which are expected to yield $20 million annually in savings and make it the Earth’s greenest building that’s also closest to the heavens!

Even though the 2,600 ft tall, 126 story Burj Dubai is still under construction, a fierce race is already brewing to construct the world’s next tallest building. Recently Santa Monica building designer Tommy Landau threw his hat into the ring by proposing a super-tall 224 story skyscraper to be located in Abu Dhabi. While the building is years away from being built, Landau is convinced that by that time technology will be advanced enough to coat the building in solar cells and power it completely with the sun. Very apropos given the tower’s desert location!
