The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has announced that the gray wolf population in Wyoming has recovered to the point where they no longer warrant protection under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). This means that from September 30th on, wolves in the state will be “managed” under an approved plan. Unfortunately, this means that Wyoming is required to maintain only 10 breeding pairs of wolves and 100 animals. It also means farmers, hunters and anyone else can essentially shoot the wolves on sight.

Late last week the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released a preliminary report that they’ve found dangerous levels of toxic chemicals related to hydraulic fracturing (or fracking) in aquifers near drinking water wells in the heavily fracked town of Pavillion, Wyoming. The EPA is currently conducting a study into the impact of fracking on drinking water, and the full study is expected to be finished at the end of 2012. In reaction to the release of the investigation in Pavillion, the oil and gas industry has gone on the full defensive over the weekend releasing statements that attempt to rip apart the EPA’s findings.

With the abundance of alternative energy sources available at our fingertips, coal mining seems a little archaic. But Interior Secretary Ken Salazar disagrees — at a press conference on Tuesday he promoted the federal government’s recent approval of public land to be used for coal mining in Wyoming. The new strip mines will be located in the Powder River Basin, and are thought to yield 758 million tons of coal over the next 20 years.

Bob Shervin, the owner of a gas station and tire store adjacent to an unsightly metal structure in Jackson, Wyoming, wanted to create an environmentally-friendly, aesthetically-pleasing building that also provided some much-needed affordable housing for his community. He approached Ward + Blake Architects with the additional challenge of maximizing the amount of leasable square footage on the property – all within the confines of a $140 per square foot budget. The resulting eco-building has a lovely roof garden at the second floor that allows apartment dwellers to enjoy the wonderful scenic views of the mountains beyond.
