Gallery: Tammam Azzam Recreates Klimt&...

Artist Tammam Azzam has created this beautiful and haunting mural on the side of a half-destroyed building in Syria. The artist superimposed Gustav Klimt's The Kiss and incorporated the sections of the wall which had been damaged in the war, juxtaposing the strength and romance of the pose with the fragility presented in the building itself.

Syrian artist Tammam Azzam has created this beautiful and haunting mural on the side of a half-destroyed building in Syria. The artist reproduced Gustav Klimt’s ‘The Kiss’, incorporating sections of the wall that had been damaged in the war, and juxtaposing the strength and romance of the painting’s pose with the fragility already present in the building. The iconic artwork, which he calls ‘Freedom Graffiti’, is a magnificent reminder of the power of human imagination even in the midst of ongoing devastation. With Syria’s unrelenting tragedies and political upheaval, Azzam will continue to recreate moving masterpieces throughout the country’s war zones to bring glimmers of hope to those who remain.
