The PRISPA’s envelope has a dual function: not only does the photovoltaic array produce twice as much energy as the home can use, but it also provides solar protection. Albeit a rather expensive prototype, Team Romania did strive to develop low-budget innovations and their perseverance definitely paid off. Just about every single aspect of this home – all of the materials and technology – were designed and implemented by the team.
To optimize energy efficiency, the Romanian team implemented an air-to-air heat exchanger system that recovers wasted heat and also ensures the best possible interior air quality. Speaking of the interior, which was full of gentle daylight, we had to kick out all the decathletes, who were sneaking catnaps, so we could take our pictures. This should give an indication of the PRISPA house’s comfort factor. Energetic and fun, these kids are among a small handful to receive the 5 bonus points for completing their project on time! Stay tuned…

Unlike most homes we’ve visited so far at the 2012 Solar Decathlon in Madrid, Team Romania’s enchanting plus-energy PRISPA house already feels like home. The prototype has a comfortable, lived-in look and feel – no wonder it has already been sold! It’s a good thing the team opted for simplicity and a modular design, because after the competition ends on 29 September, they will disassemble and reassemble the PRISPA for the third and final time.
