Germany’s Hansa has come out with these futuristic bathroom fixtures. The metal spigot has the top portion removed, creating a visible canyon for your water to run through. As if these rectangular minimalist fixtures weren’t beautiful enough, they also feature temperature sensitive LEDs lining the walls of the canyon, which illuminate the water in different colors depending on the temperature of the water (red=hot, pink=warm, blue=cold). Not that anyone really needs colored light help to discern the temperature of running water – but its a cool feature none-the-less. Who knows, maybe it could help prevent those nasty surprises you sometimes get when washing your hands or stepping into the bath a little too quickly.

The faucets come with buttons to turn the water off and on. I didn’t show these because I didn’t think they were as interesting as the faucets themeselves, but if you want to see more details of how these faucets work, go to the Hansa website. There are plenty of pictures of the on/off switches and other faucet details.

My question is, won’t the water get contaminated by dust and other things that accumulate on the trough that is exposed when the faucet is not running? I dunno if I’d want to drink out of that…
they had these at this club in baltimore called the Red Maple; They look amazing. I would definatley consider getting one if i didnt have an appartment and therefore unable to make even the slightest changes wihtout loosing my safety deposit.

I would guess that this faucet sells for comfortably well into the four figures.
The illuminated water is cute, but as the design lacks an aerator it limits the usefulness of the faucet to filling buckets (and related ‘filling’ tasks). Too many designers, not enough engineers…

They should have a fountain made in likeness. The changing colours can be really therapeutic. Works well with the bathtub definitely, i can never gauge the right temperature to get in.

Great concept, but what do you do if your husband is color blind?
I checked out the Design Boom sight, and sure, it uses lights instead of labels for water temperature, but the DESIGN is remarkably different, that you might as well criticise this designer for also using water.
Its hard to say for certain about this, but I doubt that Hansa stole this idea from Toshiro Aya, simply because Design Boom’s competition results were announced in March 2004, and Hansa has been selling these for a couple months at least (their website is so difficult to navigate – its hard to figure out exactly when this product launched). I assume that means that the Canyon line of faucets have probably been in development and production for at least 4-6 months. However, even if they got the initial idea from Toshiro Aya, the execution is so entirely different from his, that I don’t think it would really qualify as “stealing” the design. Perhaps “taking inspiration from” might be a better way to describe it.

This is one of the (if not THE) coolest additions to faucet capabilities that I have ever seen. I can see this as a means of preventing kids (or parents for that matter) from getting their hands/feet/whatever scalded by water that is too hot and it saves us all from standing there with our fingers getting frozen while we wait for the water to warm up enough to was our faces.
Now, all we need is a sink and a bath tub with the same capabilities! (Or, maybe, a sensitivity adjustment so we can set the faucet to our desired preference of water temp and, when that is reached, the water goes green or purple.)
