Terra Keramik is a Swiss ceramic company that has partnered with glassmaker Glasi, and German handmade espresso accessories company Café Kultur to export their lines of sustainably produced tableware and home décor to the North American market. Their products tend to be pricey, it’s true, but their comprehensive devotion to greening their manufacture is very admirable.

All three companies power their studios with renewable energy, the sources for which they earnestly document on the website. Their packaging is recycled and low-volume, and their filtering systems are designed to reduce emissions as much as possible. Terra Keramik has reduced energy consumption 20% by using a special clay with a lower firing temperature. Combined with lead and cadmium-free glazes, the result is a lovely rainbow of cups, teapots, plates and bowls.

$28 for a coffee mug, before shipping… I’d make sure I was already buying quality shade-grown organic fair trade coffee before spending for a platinum stripe on the rim. If bright colors are your thing, consider patronizing a local potter.
