This may look like an alien, but it’s actually humped bladderwort, an aquatic venus fly trap! Photographer Igor Siwanowicz won the 2013 Olympus BioScapes Digital Imaging Competition for capturing this incredible image of the carnivorous water plant using cellulose binding fluorescent dye called Calcofluor to create the black light poster colors inside the organism. The jaws of the humped bladderwort gape under water, waiting for unsuspecting microinvertebrates to float in. Don’t worry though, this monster is microscopic.
