Tesla Just Gave All Its Patents Away to Anyone Who Wants to Use Them
Earlier this week we reported that Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk was considering the possibility of opening some of the company’s patents in order to move the electric car industry forward. Today, the company announced that not only are they going to go ahead and open some of their patents – they are opening all of them. For anyone who wants to build on Tesla’s Supercharger patents or maybe tweak their battery technology, go on ahead - Tesla’s technology is now your technology.
The company’s press release states that it has removed all of the patents from the wall of the Palo Alto headquarters in a symbolic gesture towards the new, unprecedented policy. According to Musk, Tesla wants to “clear a path to the creation of compelling electric vehicles.” Accordingly, the company “will not initiate patent lawsuits against anyone who, in good faith, wants to use our technology.”
Musk says that the move is being made in the name of improving the impact that vehicles have on the environment, but the policy may actually help the company in addition to the environment. It turns out that Tesla’s big competitor isn’t other electric vehicles, it is other gas-based vehicles. Opening Tesla’s patents means that the entire electric car market can grow and chip away at gas vehicles as other companies start building charging stations and making innovations based on Tesla’s own technology.
Regardless, the announcement shows that Tesla is serious about not only changing the face of the traditional car, but the entire vehicle industry. “We believe that Tesla, other companies making electric cars, and the world would all benefit from a common, rapidly-evolving technology platform,” said Musk. Your move, auto industry.
