To celebrate and honor the residents of the lower 9th ward, Bill McDonough [6] spoke about his involvement in the Make it Right [7] project. Together with Brad Pitt, he managed the development of 150 LEED platinum [8]-certified homes in this area destroyed by hurricane Katrina. A new home owner of a Make it Right house took the podium after McDonough to give a heart warming story of how her family was forced to flee New Orleans and survived only on the kindness of strangers. When first moving to the newly-built eco home, her family did not have enough money to purchase furniture immediately and was forced to sleep on the floor. She was concerned that the carpet would make her sick, as she has experienced several times before. Two years later, she was ecstatic to say that her low-VOC Shaw carpeting [9] has never irritated her allergies, and she is now a proponent of clean indoor air quality.

If there was one product I wished I could take home right off of the show floor, it was the Cooper Lighting [13] io Balance Beam. The bar features a line of down-facing LEDs that illuminate when a hand grabs the bar at any spot. Developed primarily for the healthcare industry, the design would provide the safety of a grab bar while lighting the patient’s way as they travel down the hall.

Glumac [14] will soon be releasing a retrospective packed with their amazing sustainable projects. We got a behind-the-scenes look at almost forty years of one of North America’s leading MEP (Mechanical Electrical Plumbing) sustainable design firms. We asked Glumac if they have a favorite project from the collection and they noted that the 12 West Building in Portland was pretty exceptional for achieving natural ventilation in a skyscraper.

Interior Designer Chat [17] hosted a series of educational sessions and a Green Bath Design competition in conjunction with Greenbuild. Before launching into the Green Bath competition, the class watched a few fantastic videos from taptheresource.com [18] that tell stories of residential green homes from the perspective of the home owner [19]. Inhabitat sat in as the group learned Sketch Up, from a master modeler at Igloo Studios, which they used to build their green bath concepts. Designers presented their work to the representative eco expert judges from Kraftmaid Cabinetry [20] and Brizo [21] faucets. Results are not yet in, so check back at the IDC website [22] for a peek at the competition winner.

If you have not heard the news, the USGBC [8] has launched an exciting new initiative called the Center for Green Schools [25]. The goal for the center is to encourage education facilities for students of all ages to adopt green methodologies. Among the new crew leading the center are the Founding Sponsors from United Technologies. Company Vice President, Sandy Diehl, shown above with some of the Center for Green Schools crew, gave a Greenbuild opening speech about his long-standing relationship with the USGBC. United Technologies [26] is a parent company for makers of energy-efficient HVAC systems, energy-harvesting elevators, and many other future-forward technologies.
