The Chevy Volt Makes Itself Scarce This Summer

If you want a Chevy Volt [4] this summer, you will have to fight other customers for the measly stock of 200 vehicles available nationwide while GM [5] idles its Detroit-Hamtramck [6] plant. But there is a reward for the patient – at the end of August, GM will have finished upgrading the plant to create its new 2012 line of Chevy Volts, and it plans to produce a much heftier number of the range-extended EVs [7]: 16,000 by year’s end.

The Volt is also getting better. The Detroit-Hamtramck plant is being upgraded to offer more features on the 2012 Volt, plus a less expensive version of the car [8] with fewer options. The 149-horsepower car will start at $39,995, but with the federalĀ tax credit, the Volt can cost as little as $32,495. Will you be lining up to buy a Volt in August? Let us know in comments.
