The Hester Street Fair Brings Local Shopping to the LES This Weekend!

Calling all NYC Inhabitat readers — come join us this weekend at the grand opening of the Hester Street Fair in the Lower East Side! Inhabitat HQ is located smack in the middle of the lower lower East Side of Manhattan (south of Delancey), and while we love our neighborhood’s quiet charm, we couldn’t help but noticed that our area is been a bit – lacking – shall we say, in community events. That’s why we are beyond thrilled that the brand new Hester Street Fair is kicking off this weekend, April 24th in the abandoned lot between Seward Park and the high school basketball courts on Essex Street — right across the street from Inhabitat central! We’re very excited to say that we’ll be taking part in the fair with a little booth of our own. We’ll be selling organic Inhabitat wares, some handmade eco jewelry from our shop, and doing a raffle to give away a fabulous prize (stay tuned), so be sure to come check out our booth and say ‘Hi’!
We believe in the old slogan ‘think global, act local’, and we think that supporting your local community is one of the best ways to reduce carbon footprints, empower small businesses, and generally make the world a better place. And Inhabitat has been a virtual community for so long, we’re really just dying for a chance to get to know some of our neighbors a bit better. We’re super excited to see this burgeoning community interest springing up in our lower lower east side neighborhood, so we jumped at the chance to get involved.
Hester Street Fair was started by Suchin Park (of MTV fame) and Ron Castellano (the architect/developer who restored the Forward Building into condos and created our favorite local restaurant Broadway East ), when the two found out that the Seward Park Coop was looking to create a new market in the area. Suchin Pak explained:
It’s a really simple concept—we will have good STUFF (old and new), good FOOD, good FARM PRODUCE from Greenmarket in Union Square and good people, gathering every weekend to market the good old-fashioned way…face to face.
Whether you’re from our neighborhood, or somewhere else in Manhattan, we hope you’ll come down to shop for local green produce (from Union Square Greenmarket), browse unique handmade crafts and jewelry, say Hi to the NY Inhabitat Team and support the local effort. Rumor has it that the vendors at this market are going to be very hip (we keep hearing it called ‘The Brooklyn Flea of Manhattan’ ), so we know this is going to be a great event. See you there!
