Pepe Heykoop’s Matka Vases Repurpose Water Vessels and Remnant Leather

Inhabitat recently caught a glimpse of Pepe Heykoop ’s patchwork Skin Collection at the Milan Furniture Fair . The furniture and housewares collection is stitched from rough, black leather pieces that have castoff by the fashion industry. The latest addition to the Skin Collection is the patterned Matka Vase, a design that also repurposes disused water containers.
Each of the black vases is slightly different, varying in texture and pattern due to the different scraps of remnant leather used. The Skin Collection’s aesthetic incorporates the scraps’ edge seams, which creates the gorgeous textured surfaces that define the collection.
Matka Vases are used to transport water in small towns without running water. Made from stainless steel, Heykoop gives them new life with help from another waste product. Like his Leather Loops stools , the vases are made in small neighborhoods in Mumbai, with proceeds helping the local children go to school, in addition to providing jobs to the needy.
The Matka Vases are high end design pieces, crafted carefully from industry waste. Other pieces in the collection include desk chairs, benches, tables and sofas clad in soft colors and random patterns from leather scraps. The furniture that serve as the bones of the collection has all been harvested from second hand stores and the garbage .
