Gallery: The reCYCLER Upcycles Old Bikes into Funky Chairs

If you're a big fan of cycling and recycling, then you will love The reCYCLER. Founded by Gilbert Vanden Heuvel, this one man design studio from Canada turns old bike parts into all kinds of awesome, environmentally-friendly interior furnishings. We spotted the modern Tub Chair at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) in New York this weekend, but the Ontario-based artisan's repertoire includes a slew of other decorative and functional designs as well.

One day, quite by accident, Vanden Heuvel found that his love of cycling combined with metal working skills he developed while running a pig farm made an curious combination. After making his first pedestal table with old bikes lying around his garage, he gradually began to experiment with other designs. This work became so much fun he sold the pig farm and now devotes himself completely to merging glass, metal, old gear parts and other materials to create urban furniture with a green touch.

Now Vanden Heuvel is virtually unstoppable. His line includes everything from chairs to desks and even clocks and mirrors, and he does custom work as well. Each unique piece spares a pile of materials from polluting the dump and boasts serious industrial chic appeal. Stop by ICFF to meet the Inhabitat team and meet with designers from around the world who are showcasing their best green designs.
