THE WORLD’S MOST SUSTAINABLE SKYSCRAPER

Last weekend at the AIGA Grow conference I had the opportunity to hear first hand about the massive green skyscraper that is under construction at One Bryant place in midtown New York. I’ve actually walked past the enormous construction site several times without ever realizing the importance of the building going up. When the new Bank of America building, designed by Cook + Fox Architects , is completed – it will be the first skyscraper ever to attain a Platinum LEED accreditation. And since Platinum is the best you can get out of the four-tiered LEED system, it means that this will be the greenest skyscraper in the world.
Lead designer Serge Appel spoke at the Grow conference to explain the details of how this building will use high-tech environmental technologies to promote the health and wellbeing of its occupants, reduce waste, and ensure environmental sustainability (and economic efficiency) for years to come. The 2.1 million square foot building will capture and re-use all rainwater and wastewater, saving millions of gallons of water each year. The majority of buildings construction materials will come from recycled and renewable sources within 500 miles of New York City. Finally the building will use translucent, high-performance glass floor-to-ceiling to ensure maximum daylighting in interior spaces, while the faceted crystalline structure of the facade will minimize obstruction of views and sunlight for the surrounding buildings and street.
The building will be completed in 2008. For more details on the construction, please see the Cook + Fox website:
