Tiered Green Roofs Crown the Landmark Bobigny School in France

A series of green roofs crown the new Bobigny school in France. A landmark urban facility by Mikou Design Studio ^[6], the three story school spirals down on the north side to maximize daylighting ^[7] and create a protective shield and presents itself as a double story on the pedestrian side. This facade is comprised of alternating timber panels and glazed openings, and the entire program was designed as a symbol of the city's renewal.

Located on a tight urban block, the school is one part of a larger complex, but it was primarily important to ensure that the children should feel protected. This sensibility is achieved with the elliptical form ^[8] organized around a series of inner courtyards. Careful orientation ensures that each level is exposed to an optimum level of daylighting. Every terrace boasts green roofs ^[9] and planted screens.

The side of the building that is visible from the street is clad in an alternating mosaic ^[10] of solid timber panels of varying hues. Creating a striking pixelated effect, this facade helps to establish the new school as a landmark destination. Glazed openings combined with massive light wells ^[11] inside ensure that natural light pours into the interior. Overall, this is a remarkable project that fosters a happy green aesthetic.
