Philips has just unveiled the world’s most energy-efficient LED bulb [2]. The TLED bulb, still in the prototype stage, is based on tube lighting technology and provides a warmer glow than conventional LEDs. Each bulb generates 200lm/W of high quality light—more than twice as much as the company’s current LED bulbs, and according to Philips the bulb is up to twice as efficient as its predecessors.

The TLED prototype [3] is the first lamp to reach 200lm/W without compromising light quality. Researchers at Phillips have combined two blue and one red LED and applied a green filter to convert one of the blue ones into green. This resulted in relatively warm light that generates more than twice as many lumens per-watt as the company’s previous LED bulbs.

If the new bulbs were to replace the fluorescent ones which consume around 200 terawatts of electricity annually in the United States alone, the total use of energy would drop for around 100 terawatts, according to Phillips. This would save more than $12 billion and prevent around 60 million metric tons of carbon dioxide [4] from reaching the atmosphere.

The 200lm/W TLED lamps are slated to hit the market in 2015.
