This incredible rooftop garden is the product of an inspired retrofit that re-imagined a mediocre three-story home into six bright and beautiful apartments in Ekoda, Tokyo. Designed by Suppose Design Office, this modern structure is a bold architectural expression described by the architects as “vintage denim pants with a new shirt.” Careful not to waste the existing structural elements, most of the home was in fact left intact, but adding strategic walls, sound proofing and entrances made for an incredible, eclectic space topped with a a spa rooftop.
The main goal of the retrofit was to refresh the interior’s feel and function by discreetly removing and adding walls and exposing structural elements. Sound proofing and insulation were primary issues as was exterior accessibility to the two downstairs apartments, three second-floor apartments and the penthouse. To create a unique but effective path, an interesting array of ladders and exterior stairs progress through the spaces.
The crowning piece of the renovation is without question the top penthouse, which is highlighted with bare metal lattice beams, funky cubby spaces and a solarium transformed into a magnificent bath. Best of all if you take the ladder up through the ceiling, you’ll find yourself in a huge glass room featuring a full-sized bath, spa and an amazing shower with a 360 view of the neighborhood!
