Calling all Tom Dixon fans in New York!
We want to remind you that the renowned British designer Tom Dixon will be speaking at HauteGREEN TODAY, Saturday May 19th at 3pm.
The maverick British design star may be best known for shiny silver Mirror Ball lamps and his role as the creative director of UK design store Habitat, but Tom has a long history of engagement with recycling and sustainability that is equally, if not more, noteworthy. His green efforts include the Eco Ware tableware line, made from biodegradable plastic and bamboo, his EcoPolo for Lacoste, and the publication of a great book called ReThink that highlights the use of re-used and re-purposed objects in design (the theme of our Reclaiming Design panel!), as well as his new sustainable venture with Artek in bamboo furniture. Tom will be speaking about his work in sustainable design with New York design journalist Julie Taraska.

Tom Dixon
Born in Sfax, Tunisia in 1959, to a French/Latvian mother and an English father, Dixon moved to England aged four and spent his school years in London. Attending Chelsea Art School for a brief six-month period, a motorbike accident curtailed any artistic ambition and left him in hospital for three months. Having dropped out of Art school, Dixon spent two years as a musician, playing bass guitar in a disco band until another motorcycle accident left him unable to play for a period. He spent two more years in the burgeoning London night club and warehouse party scene. This nocturnal lifestyle left plenty of time in the day to start experimenting with welded structures. Necessary bike maintenance had required welding skills, which a friend supplied in one quick lesson.
He is a self-educated maverick whose only qualification is a one-day course in plastic bumper repair.

Julie Taraska
Julie Taraska can thank the Sex Pistols for her career, as it was after winning a fellowship to study British punk that she moved to London and began writing professionally. Upon returning to the States, she spent a half-dozen years covering bands, editing magazines, and running her own consulting firm before segueing into design journalism. Currently she is the articles editor of Home Magazine. She is the former editor of metropolismag.com, the online arm of Metropolis magazine. Her writing has appeared in over two dozen publications, including Metropolis, The Village Voice, British GQ, and Icon; she is also a contributing editor to four books.
It is just great to know that there are designers who practice their craft with sustainability in mind.
