Stunning Stamen Chandeliers Made From Toothpicks

Designed by Daisuke Hiraiwa [5], these elegant echidna [6]-esque Stamen chandeliers elevate an everyday material into brilliant expressions of found design [7]. Each one is created by gluing hundreds of toothpicks together to form a flexible disc that gives their bristling points a fluid form. The pointillist pendant lamps recently debuted at ICFF 2009 [8], where they wowed onlookers with their complex folding curves and innovative use of materials.

To create his stunning toothpick pendant lamps [9], Daisuke uses a process that is strikingly simple. First he arranges hundreds of toothpicks so that they are standing on end in a recessed circular container. Next he paints over the ends with a flexible Japanese glue. The result is a flexible disc that folds in upon itself in beautiful ways when hung from above.
Although they’re not technically recycled [10] toothpicks (eew) and the use of glue isn’t all that eco friendly, we were struck by the Stamen chandeliers’ innovative use of everyday materials [11]. Just be sure to hang them away from eye level!
