Toyota [2] is partnering with Massachusett’s-based WiTricity [3] to develop a new kind of wireless charging for electric vehicles [4] that doesn’t require contact. Called “resonance,” this new tech is more efficient than induction [5], another wireless technology that requires a vehicle to touch the charging station to work. Resonance is already used in smaller applications such as cell phone charging, but WiTricity believes it could be used more widely for charging larger electric devices, from wireless picture frames and flat-screen TVs hanging on walls to electric vehicles.

If Toyota [2] and WiTricity are successful in developing resonance charging technology, charging your electric car could be as simple as parking in a garage near a charger, with no need to plug in. One charger could also theoretically power a whole household of electronic devices, similar to the way wireless internet connects multiple computers in a household.
