Gallery: Toyota Recalls 2.77 Million Vehicles Worldwide for Water Pump,...

Toyota has announced the recall of 2.77 million vehicles worldwide, which includes the recall of 670,000 Prius models in the U.S. Toyota’s latest recall will fix a possible water pump problem and steering defect in many of its models. The recall covers the second-generation Prius in the United States, which was built from the years 2004-2009.

According to Toyota, approximately 350,000 of the 670,000 Prius models recalled in the United States will be inspected to replace the electric water pump. In the hybrid system, there is an electrically driven water pump that circulates coolant through the hybrid components to provide cooling. The electric motor that powers the pump may fail, disabling the Prius hybrid’s powertrain. The electric water pump recall covers five Toyota models worldwide, which is estimated to be around 630,000 vehicles.

The steering defect affects 10 models worldwide. Toyota has reportedly received reports that the splines connecting the steering shaft to the steering gear box can deform over time if the steering wheel is frequently and forcefully turned to the full left or full right position while driving at slow speeds. Dealers will inspect the extension shaft and replace it if needed, which should only take about an hour.

Toyota states that there have been no accidents or injuries related to either recall and will begin notifying owners next month.
