Of course I am a day late but I just wanted to say I watch from morning to night and I have never seen an episode for a person with difficulties. I used to be able to build a house with the heel of my Ferragamo to sneakers braces and a wheelchair. I dream od the surprise of David pulling up to my home and have his way with any room he wants, they all can use a brush up. You are all great And it's a pleasure to watch great tv.

My family and I are avid recyclers. We live in an apartment. Right now, our recycling area consists of a small trash can next to our regular trash can. I'd love to set up a recycling area and system that is efficent and attractive, and allows us to sort recyclables and store them until they're ready to go to the recycling bin.

My dream green home is something I've wanted since I was young and took an interest in the environmental movement. I would like a house with a solar paneled roof tilted towards the sunrise for optimal efficiency. Where possible, for example drywall and decking, I would use recycled materials. I'd love to live near a stream, using gravity fed hosing to water the lawn. As for heating, geothermal all the way. Rainwater collection barrels, a reverse osmosis system, and perhaps even a small personal windmill. Would be very nice to get paid by the electric company for surplus power :) I would also enjoy setting up the 'yard space' as a prime environment for indigenous species, bird houses, local plantlife, all landscaping designed to incorporate nature. That's my dream house :D Oh and if possible maybe a little power from the stream too

I recently built a small (1050 sq ft) energy efficient home. I'd like to add solar panels to the slanted roof and install a solar power transfer system, add a small wind turbine, add small ventilation windows near the high end of the great room ceiling, and install a small wood stove.

I would install water recycling using brown water for gardening, a small winnd turbine and solar panels to charge my electric car. Build a compost barrel to make nutrients for my new raised bed vegatable gardens. Plant trees for shade over my to keep it cool in the summer.

My ultimate green home fantasy makeover would be to install a green roof and water reclamation system for rainwater. The green roof could also support some vegetables and herbs for daily use and would filter the rainwater that will be stored for use in the gardens. It would also be my ultimate fantasy to have enough solar panels for the tank-less water heater and to get the house completely off the electrical grid. A grey water system for the laundry, showers and sinks would help complete my fantasy home to conserve water for use in the garden for the fruit trees and vegetables. It would a dream come true to use the sun and conservation of water resources to keep my home warm and gardens thriving.

We're already half way there! We're still rebuilding from Hurricane Katrina...and by rebuilding I mean that we're actually building the house ourselves. We're not in the construction biz or have formal training on any of this but, crazy as it sounds, we made that choice and decided to do it as green as possible. Here's a few of the things that we have already installed:

Mini-split HVAC system
Low/no VOC paint
Bamboo flooring (in process of installing)
Soy based foam insulation (DIY kit)
Reflective metal roof

So why am I posting? So much remains unfinished. We were forced to move back in before the house was complete. Immediate needs are furniture and kitchen cabinets. Long term goals are solar panels and a grey water recapture system for my garden.

You can learn more about our story at http://katrinasos.wordpress.com/. I haven't posted in awhile but this will give you an idea of what we've endured.

We rent our home, so while a full photovoltaic system would be our true dream, we know it might not be possible yet. So we're just hoping to install a small garden plot in the backyard to grow our own vegetables. This will encourage our two small sons to eat well, and we will know exactly how our food is grown (pesticide free!) Growing here at home conserves fuel necessary to transport our food from halfway across the world when we can easily make it in our own backyard. And it's fun too!

My green home makeover would definitely be energy efficient and comfortable at the same time. Temperature and light are tricky to balance. Ideally, I would love lots of glass windows in my home. That way, I can maximize natural light and minimize energy bill for artificial light. If my room is overheated, simply putting on the bright-colored blinds would help deflecting sunlight. Water is another big factor for green home makeover. Toilet water could be filtered and used to irrigate backyard garden. Having lots of vegetation around the house also help reduce the heat and provide ambient environment to the owners. Materials used should come from renewable or reclaimed sources to minimize environmental impacts of virgin materials.

as much as i'd love to ask for help at our house, we don't really need it. we're slowly renovating as we have money and can make decisions.

the ultimate makeover project, for me, would be a project in which louisville ky's derelict shotguns are purchased, undergo green makeovers using non-profit teaching organizations like youthbuild, and then get sold at cost. this would simultaneously save our historic housing stock (often available for $1, $100, $1000...), reinforce neighborhoods, and provide much-needed affordable housing in urban neighborhoods. the houses are there - just need to be made fit!

louisville has more shotguns than any city in the country, they're easy to modify and maintain, and they create a unique neighborhood character. they accept green systems and materials without compromising their character and - in cases where they can be purchased in multiples - they can use systems like geothermal economically through cooperative ownership of well-fields!

i don't have the resources to pursue this myself, but i'd love to organize such an effort in conjunction with someone who did!

I am tearing everything down and starting from new. I am replacing my conventional wooden home with a a few matson containers. five lined up side by side with the walls torn down to connect the insides, and also one matson on the top placed on the edge so i can put in a garden on my roof that is fenced. the exterior and interior would be mortar plastered down with a mixture of grancrete and hempcrete to create insulation. the furniture will be of a wooden board with a sculptured couch made out of cob so as to keep it portable. the moral to the story is i have learned how to build a house for 1/150th of that of a normal home. dome frame x burlap x magnesium cement (MgO). i am twenty two years old and i own five houses in five different countries. i dont want a gift card. i just want to help spread sustainability practices. aloha www.in4mation.com -- www.thehumanimagination.info

I am building a mobile spa environment for Burning Man 2011. I need help with the design of the following GREEN aspects:
- cooling the interior in the hot daytime with little to no electricity
- heating the interior in the cold nighttime with little to no electricity
- insulating the space from exterior and truck noise.

We are currently renovating a house built in the early 70s.
We are changing all lighting to LED, and installing considerable rain harvesting capabilities, increasing insulation and adding more natural light--we are pushing very close to the passivehaus standard, hoping to be almost entirely off the grid.
The two things that our budget hasn't allowed, yet, are solar panels and a small wind turbine... HGTV could help! :)

While there are many projects I would like to do to make my home greener, I think that installing a geothermal system is the ultimate dream for me!

I would LOVE to replace our old laminate flooring with bamboo, update the windows for better insulation, rearrange the lighting so we didn't need to have so many light bulbs turned on all the time, update the appliances, and do a HUGE redesign of the garden to optimize passive solar heating in the winter and summer. I couldn't do it all with $100, but it's a place to start. :)

Every home has major inefficiencies that needs rectifying. I live in an apartment because I believe that is more earth friendly. However, we have lots of old stuff like a crazy refrigerator that sucks up energy and produces lots of heat that our less crazy (not by much) air conditioner has to compensate for. It's hard to buy a bunch of new stuff for the sake of energy bills, but it would be great to have.
