What is better than fireflies in the night? An art installation that resembles them, of course. Studio Toer from the Netherlands a dazzling new installation around a tree for this year's Amsterdam Light Festival. Located within a secluded square at the Hortus Botanicus, 'Social Sparkles' is a hovering cloud of 100 tiny LED lights that wait calmly in the dark until someone pops in. Like fireflies, the kinetic installation twinkles magically above visitors' heads.
We recently showed you how the Amsterdam Light Festival is setting the city aglow with brilliant light art pieces scattered around the city. One of those artworks is by Eindhoven-based Studio Toer and takes inspiration from the natural bioluminescence of fireflies. ‘Social Sparkles’ is a cumulus of LEDs that hovers around a tree that only reacs when there are people around.
It consists of 100 elements that sense movement, twinkle and seem to fly as visitors enter the square. This way a swarm of lights fills the air above, inviting interaction and producing a sense of awe.
Watch the video above to get a feeling of it, and if you have plans to visit Amsterdam before the festival ends on 17 January, 2016, you’re in for an unforgettable treat.
