British researchers are working to develop a solar-powered kit [1] that could lighten the load of its troops by 50 percent. Comprising photovoltaic cells [2] to harness the sun’s energy, as well as thermoelectric devices [3] that turn temperature differentials into electricity, the new power packs eliminate the need to return to base for recharging, increasing the potential range and duration of military operations. The fact that the system taps into clean and free sources of energy has its environmental advantages, as well.
