UK citizens were recently traumatized to learn that ground “beef” sold by local supermarkets was contaminated with horse meat – but the scandal has inspired a very different reaction in France. Apparently the publicity surrounding the scandal has led to a 15% rise in horse meat sales in the past week. Since the story broke, the French have flocked to horse meat butchers, forgoing frozen food for the scandalous meat.

    Having grown up on a farm and raised all of the major North American meat animals, as well as horses, I’ve never understood why it’s such a forbidden fruit. Hogs are far more intelligent and anatomically closer to us. If there were one common meat animal that I’d think about removing from my diet for ethical reasons, that’d be it.

    Horse is pretty good by the way. A bit gamier than beef, but tasty if the chef knows what he’s doing.
