Although food that has exceeded its sell-by date is still good for a short time, most of it is unfortunately thrown away. So Leeds-based chef Adam Smith opened a cafe that dishes out deliciously healthy ‘expired’ meals. Called P.A.Y.F (‘Pay As You Feel’), this inspiring little cafe not only combats food waste but also helps locals in need.

Adam Smith sources discarded ingredients from Leeds’ various food establishments. He and his team then prepare healthy and mostly vegetarian freegan vegetarian meals saving perfectly good food from ending up in landfill.

Free from set prices, his customers donate what they feel, or what they have at the time. Eco, friendly and green, the cafe also includes a ‘swap-shop’ facility and a vegetable garden for passers-by to take free food.
