Most people across the middle of the country and stretching to the East Coast would not think they’d be spending the first week of January without a winter coat. But last week’s weather broke thousands of daily record highs for this normally wintry month — an incredible 1,140 daily record highs were broken during the first seven days of the year. Global warming is a huge problem, but this is the wrong stat to look at. If you look at virtually any January, you’ll almost always find something near 2% of the highs broken for the month somewhere in the country and no clear trend. It’s much more important to look at average temperates over time, first freeze, final freeze etc. Picking years at 10 year intervals here are the number of highs broken in each January.

    1991- 430 (Highs Broken) + 263 (Tied) = 693 Total
    1981- 3,686 (Highs Broken) + 943 (Tied) = 4629
    1971- 2,121 (Highs Broken) + 683 (Tied) = 2,804 Total
    1961- 1,424 (Highs Broken) + 531 (Tied) = 1,955
    1951- 1,582 (Highs Broken) + 430 (Tied) = 2,012
