No backyard barn job, this collection of glass animals is comprised of a series of preserve jars, wine bottles and other used glassware transformed into playful lamps. Working with wood and lac turnery craftsmen from Channapatna in Karnataka, India, Chauhan added polished hooves, snouts and ears to each bottle so that they would resemble cheerful farm animals.

Once the detailing is completed, each upcycled lamp is fitted with a switch and bulb. “With minimal intervention from the designer and the craftsman, objects that would otherwise have met uninteresting ends in the recycling chain have been born again as playful, usable products,” says Chauhan. An upcycled hippo lamp would certainly light up our lives; how about you?
