Gallery: Upcycled Bottles Become Giraffes, Hippos and Pigs in Nishi Chu...

'Tis the season to be merry and drink a lot of beer and wine, but what will happen to the empty bottles when the last dizzy drop is gone? Hopefully they'll go to the recycling bin so they can be reused, but some of more adventurous readers might take heart from Nishi Chauhan's adorable collection of upcycled lamps called Animal Farm.

No backyard barn job, this collection of glass animals is comprised of a series of preserve jars, wine bottles and other used glassware transformed into playful lamps. Working with wood and lac turnery craftsmen from Channapatna in Karnataka, India, Chauhan added polished hooves, snouts and ears to each bottle so that they would resemble cheerful farm animals.

Once the detailing is completed, each upcycled lamp is fitted with a switch and bulb. “With minimal intervention from the designer and the craftsman, objects that would otherwise have met uninteresting ends in the recycling chain have been born again as playful, usable products,” says Chauhan. An upcycled hippo lamp would certainly light up our lives; how about you?
