UPDATE: Our $8500 Method Laundry Room Makeover Revealed!
Posted By Diane Pham On September 14, 2010 @ 6:55 pm In Announcements,Contests,Design,Green Interiors | 6 Comments
Just last month we announced the lucky grand prize winner of our $8500 Laundry Room Makeover contest , where we teamed up with Method to turn one lucky person’s drab laundry space into an energy-efficient oasis of green cleaning. Our incredible prize package came complete with a brand new energy-efficient washer and dryer and an entire year’s supply of Method’s eco-friendly laundry detergent — and our lucky winner Karen Murphy just celebrated the completion of this newly renovated room with her first load of laundry! Doing laundry is no longer a chore for the Murphy family, as Inhabitat worked with True Line Construction to transform their laundry space from ‘meh’ to ‘magnifique’! Click ahead to see some snaps of this eco-fab renovation.
As one of the most utilized spaces in the house, Karen’s laundry room was far from welcoming. A windowless space with a low ceiling, a depressing ecru and pale yellow paint job only exacerbated the tedium of doing laundry. To revive the space and breathe some vibrancy into the room, the not so sunny yellow paint was replaced with a bright splash of no-VOC blue and white to transform the room into an enjoyable and eco-friendly haven of fabric softeners, fluffy towels and the fresh scent of detergent.
We don’t blame Karen for keeping a dated washer dryer in her old laundry room — replacements are quite a costly investment — but we realized if we really wanted to make this an uber-green laundry room, those outdated energy hogs had to go! We replaced Karen’s old machines with a beautiful, brand new energy-efficient washer and dryer set. Now, not only is Karen able to cut down on both her water and energy usage with each wash, the shiny new washer/dryer pair look fantastic against the new decor!
One of Karen’s biggest issues with her old laundry room was all of the clutter that accumulated — no matter how much effort she put into organizing it, things kept piling up. To remedy this problem, our designers made sure that shelf space was ample, carefully distributed and covert. A series of shelves were built-in and fitted with cool new curtains to keep the space feeling clean and serene.
As one of the most trafficked rooms in the house, connecting the interior right to the garage, the floor took a real beating with time. We decided to remove the worn out underfoot material and replaced it with Flor tiles, an application designed specifically for high-traffic rooms. Throughout the construction no-VOC MDF materials were used in order to ensure fresh and toxin-free air circulation. Karen’s new laundry room also boasts energy-monitoring devices with Blueline and Kill-A-Watt monitors to help her and her family keep keen to their energy consumption.
ABOUT METHOD
Focused on doing away with dirty, Method was started to bring consumers environmentally-friendly alternatives to the harsh chemicals traditionally found in cleaning supplies. Method’s founders, Eric Ryan and Adam Lowry, realized people wanted cleaning supplies they didn’t have to hide under the sink or in the closet, so they got started developing new alternatives to old standards.
That’s why you should check out Method’s brand new laundry detergent . Made with smartclean technology™, a patent-pending formula using a radical technology, Method Laundry delivers outstanding cleaning power with just 1/4th the dose of the leading national brand. One lil’ bottle holds enough for 50 loads and works in high-efficiency and standard machines.
